We, as fitness enthusiasts, have always been told to train aerobically 5 days a week for 30 minutes. That is optimal cardiovascular fitness training. However, in August of 2007, new guidelines have been issued by the American Heart Assoication, and the American College of Sport Medicine.

Both organization state you can workout aerobically for 20 minutes, 3 days a week, and witness the same benefits as working out for 30 minutes, 5 days a week. However, here is the catch. The cardiovascular workout program must be vigorous in nature.

What they mean by vigorous aerobic training is working out at a perceived exertion rate of 6-8 on a scale from 1 - 10. We are not talking about window shopping walks here. We are talking about huffing and puffing, and perspiring workouts.

Please be aware by working out shorter, and more intense you will probably not burn as many calories as you would doing longer sessions for more days a week.

If you decide to increase the intensity on your aerobic fitness training, and have been sedentary, and over the age of 50, consult a physician prior to boosting the intensity of aerobic exercise.
