After working out at Gold’s Gym in Venice for over ten years it was not uncommon seeing bodybuilders, and fitness buffs carrying gallon jugs of water around from machine to machine. Over the years we have all been taught to drink lots of water. Drinking water is believed to help your system burn more body fat, improve skin tone, and even expel toxins from your kidneys. At least that is what has been accepted at truth for decades.

This is just another reason to live a healthy lifestyle. I don’t know how much proof people need to begin taking action. It is not that complicated! The World Cancer Research Fund and the American Institute for Cancer Research just completed an extensive 571 page report showing a strong link between lifestyle and cancer.  A group of 21 researchers evaluated 7000 studies over a 5 year period to conclude the findings. Many believe this was the most comprehensive evaluation of studies ever to link lifestyle choices to cancer.  Therefore, it leads me to believe there is something strong here.

Staph infections are on the rise! It seems a strain of the bacterium methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aurenus (MRSA) has spread from our local hospitals into our health clubs, and gyms. 

The bacterial infections are being spread when people unknowingly share contaminated towels, and gym equipment.

So what are the symptoms of the health club spaph infections, and how do you prevent yourself from getting one?

If you notice an infection on your skin in the form of boils, or a localized painful rash, and it just doesn’t go away, you could have a spaph infection. It is said to be the leading cause of skin related visits to emergency rooms in the United States.

To prevent staph infections don’t share towels, wipe down gym equipment with alcohol spray, and cover equipment with a clean towel. If you notice a rash that doesn’t go away, get into see your doctor immediately to treat the infection. Good luck!
